KS Gov Calls for More Storm Preparedness

Lawrence, Kan. – Power is slowly returning to the storm-damaged town of Reading (RED-ing). Utility crews said they hoped to have electricity restored to 30-percent of the town by Monday night. But water and sewer service remain unavailable. In the wake of deadly and damaging tornadoes over the weekend, state officials are calling for more storm preparedness. KPR's J. Schafer has more.

Children's Dental Health Still Lags In Kansas

SALINA, Ks. – A new report from the Pew Center on the States says Kansas is not making any progress in addressing the dental needs of children. As Kansas Public Radio's Bryan Thompson reports, Kansas met only four of the eight benchmarks in the "Making Coverage Matter" report card again this year.

Volunteers Aid in Rescue Efforts in Joplin

Joplin, Mo. – Missouri Governor Jay Nixon wants a second search of every collapsed building. But a city official says all FEMA requirements are being met, including double examinations of buildings. Relief work though has barely begun. Dan Verbeck is in Joplin and has this report.

Recovery Efforts Begin in Joplin, Mo.

Joplin, Mo. – The city of Joplin is trying to recover from Sunday night's tornado that killed at least 116 people. The recovery has been slow but methodical. KCUR's Dan Verbeck is there.

So many hundreds of homes over more than a hundred square blocks were damaged or destroyed. And it ripped apart families.

Fire rescue teams from Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas have been searching for victims since shortly after the F-4 twister struck. The effort has never let up.

    JOPLIN, Mo. – The fatality count in Joplin Missouri is up to 116, and as KCUR's Dan Verbeck reports, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon is ordering a second search for survivors.

    Outside the shambles of the now closed regional hospital, Governor Jay Nixon just finished speaking with reporters in the midst of a blinding lightning and thunderstorm and an eye-watering mix of spilled gasoline from scores of cars tumbled about in the parking lot.

    116 Confirmed Dead in Joplin; Rescue Search Continues Amid Downpour

    JOPLIN, Mo. – Rescue crews in Joplin are continuing to make a block by block search for survivors of last night's deadly tornado. So far officials have confirmed 116 dead, with more expected.

    KCUR's Dan Verbeck is in Joplin and says rescuers are searching an 80 square block area. The weather, he says, isn't helping.
