KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas is shutting down most beds at Rainbow Mental Health, a local psychiatric hospital. Law enforcement and mental health leaders worry the state might one day shut down the facility.

Authorities say a Johnson County deputy fatally shot a man who was running away as he was being arrested.

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback's office wants to overhaul the way schools are funded in the state.

Funding Worries Delay Animal Shelter Deal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A plan for better management of the Kansas City, Missouri animal shelter ran into a roadblock Thursday, a week before it was to come up for a city council vote.

A day after a council committee endorsed a new contractor to take over the animal shelter, the full council voted to send the matter back to committee.

    Early KC Venue Turns 75

    Kansas City, MO. – Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium turned 75 today as a party celebrated renovation of the building once termed "the best architecture in America." To the masses it was much, much more.

    Municipal Auditorium has seen more events than you can count. There have been basketball tourneys, circuses, wrestling matches, and performances by musicians from Louis Armstrong to Elvis Presley.

    Artist Petah Coyne: Peacocks as Symbol of Renewal

    Sculptor Petah Coyne's Untitled #1336 (Scalapino Nu Shu) is a massive installation, featuring a 14-foot-high apple tree covered in black sand, and taxidermied pheasants and peacocks. The subtitle of the work refers to Coyne's friendship with the late poet Leslie Scalapino, and n? shu - a centuries old Chinese writing technique used by women, stories told in secret writing.

    Shawnee County DA Will Resume Taking Domestic Abuse Cases

    TOPEKA, Ks. – Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor says he will once again prosecute domestic battery cases from Topeka. Taylor's office and the Topeka City Council had been in a month-long standoff over who should prosecute the crimes.

    After taking a budget cut, Taylor's office stopped prosecuting misdemeanor domestic abuse cases from Topeka.
