Family Copes With Medical Bills And Eviction

Kansas City, MO – As medical costs continue to rise, many families face mounting debt as a result of hospital stays, prescriptions drug costs and lost time at work.

A study in the American Journal of Medicine found hospital and medical bills contributed to three out of five bankruptcies in 2007 - a fifty percent jump from just six years earlier.

Things haven't gotten to that point yet for Vickie Day and her family.

Public Weighs In On Deer Debate

Shawnee Mission, Kansas – Driving the rolling roads of Shawnee Mission Park's two square miles isn't as serene as it used to be. On summer evenings at dusk, traffic and rowdy kids populate the roads as deer graze quietly nearby. A recent Park Board report says that killing some of the deer is the most effective and economical solution to the overpopulation problem. Johnson County's Park Board holds a public hearing on the matter.

Kansas City, MO – The Missouri Supreme Court has ruled that sex offenders who committed crimes before 1995 will still have to put their names on the state sex offender registry.

The Missouri Supreme Court says a private jail in western Missouri must pay taxes on food, clothes and other products for inmates.

Kansas City, MO – About 150 people packed a meeting room at the Kansas City Missouri school district headquarters last night. Many came to protest the closing of about a dozen schools. KCUR's Sylvia Maria Gross was there.

Overland Park To Host Soccer Championship

Overland Park, KS – The nation's best youth soccer players will face off in Kansas City's largest suburb.

Overland Park will play host to the 2010 U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship. Games will be held at Overland Park's new $36 million soccer complex that opens to the public this summer.

U.S. Youth Soccer Spokesperson Todd Roby says the complex's new fields placed it at the front the applicant pack.

Kansas City, MO – High winds and heavy rain caused extensive damage in the Cass County town of Drexel last night.

Dropping enrollment, falling tax revenues, and fewer state and federal dollars--those were just some of the bleak projections presented to the public during the Kansas City School District's budget meeting last night.

A national study says Missouri charter school students, on average, do better in reading and math than those attending public schools.
