Elana Gordon covers the health beat at KCUR. She was previously a production assistant for KCUR’s live daily news show, Up to Date, and reported for the bilingual newspaper, Dos Mundos. Before taking the plunge into radio, Gordon worked as a prevention specialist at a health clinic. She has a dual degree in Political Science and Music from Barnard College. It was there that she first caught the radio bug as an occasional host/producer for the music program, In All Languages, on WKCR 89.9 FM.

Adjusting To Life In Kansas City With HIV

Bester Seemani (l) was diagnosed with HIV 12 years ago in Kansas City, altering plans to return to her daughter, Sue (r), in Zambia.

Between July 22 and 27, thousands of people from around the world convened in Washington D.C. to study the global HIV/AIDS crisis.  But in the Kansas City region, more than 6,000 people are living with HIV. That includes Bester Seemani, who says an AIDS diagnosis twelve years ago completely changed her life and her journey back home. Seemani, joined by her daughter Sue, recently told KCUR’s Elana Gordon that one of the biggest struggles, and paths to healing, has been dealing with the stigma of the disease in the U.S and in Africa.
