Kansas City, MO – Violation of the Kansas City, Missouri dress code enforcement and public accommodations ordinances now become punishable with a license suspension. The council made that decision Thursday and gave the department of Regulated Industries the power to act on it.
Councilwoman Cindy Circo explained what she and her colleagues were trying to accomplish: to make it clear to the community that the council takes the issue seriously, and to "give our citizens the comfort level of knowing they are going to be treated fairly, and if they are not treated fairly, what we are going to do about it."
The amendment to existing ordinances says if an establishment posts a dress code and then deviates from it, regulated industries has the power to revoke its license for a period as defined in the liquor control ordinance and other city statutes.
Terry Riley, sponsor of the measure, said the changes apply to all public venues, not just the Power and Light district, where complaints have focused.
Riley says the change has the endorsement of the restaurant and bar owners. The council also approved funding for the Red Bridge Improvement District and the Botts Road site for a new defense plant.
