Kansas City, Mo. – Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences has filed a lawsuit against its former CEO and president, Karen Pletz.

The university fired Pletz this past winter. The civil suit filed in Jackson County circuit court today alleges that she misused millions of dollars for her own personal benefit.

Terry Dunn is a board member at KCUMB and helped organize an investigation. He says it found that Pletz and several senior officers had misled the university for several years.

"This was an effort on the part of a number of people to conceal facts and to take money from the institution," says Dunn.

Dunn says the board has since been working to improve the governance process at the university, to prevent problems like this from happening again.

The lawsuit alleges, among many things, that about 70% of the charges on Pletz's expense accounts were based on false information, and went towards things like personal travel, meals, and entertainment.

Later in the day, Pletz filed acountersuit, saying she had been wrongfully terminated and that the allegations against her were "grossly exaggerated."
