What exactly is "world music"? Does it include songs that are sung in different languages ... or even bluegrass? As the Folk Alliance Internationalconference gets underway in Kansas City, we explore what this nebulous term means to an ethnomusicology professor and two local musicians.

Guests:

  • Stephanie Shonekan, Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology and Black Studies, University of Missouri in Columbia
  • Enrique Chi, musician, Making Movies
  • Gerald Trimble, local musician and session leader at the Folk Alliance conference on "bluegrass as world music."

People don't make cameos in news stories; the human story is the story, with characters affected by news events, not defined by them. As a columnist and podcaster, I want to acknowledge what it feels like to live through this time in Kansas City, one vantage point at a time. Together, these weekly vignettes form a collage of daily life in Kansas City as it changes in some ways, and stubbornly resists change in others.
