Parents Illustrate The Funny Side Of Autism In Kansas City Production

To call raising kids with with autism or autism spectrum disorder a challenge would probably be underselling it ... by quite a bit.

For many parents of kids with autism, maintaining a sense of humor is an essential component. Those experiences will be illustrated by some Kansas City area parents in An Evening with the Rents where they will deliver stand-up comedy routines centered around living with children on the spectrum.

On today's show, host Steve Kraske talks with the event organizer and two of the participating parents about the lighter side of living with autism.

Guests:

  • Keenan Stump, speech therapist whose clients include those within the autism spectrum.
  • Olivia Cytrynowicz, editor for Hallmark and the mother of three.
  • Lou Melgarejo, married father of three whose oldest daughter has autism spectrum disorder. A television director by trade, he created Lou's Land, where he blogs about a life touched by autism from the father’s perspective.

HEAR MORE: An Evening With The 'Rents - A Benefit for Camp Encourage takes place at 7 p.m Friday, Feb. 28 at The Mission Theatre, 5903 Johnson Dr, Mission, Kan.  Tickets are available at Brown Paper Tickets.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers. Reach me at steve@kcur.org or on Twitter @stevekraske.
As senior producer of Up To Date, I want our listeners to hear familiar and new voices that shine light on the issues and challenges facing the myriad communities KCUR serves, and to expose our audiences to the wonderful and the creative in the Kansas City area. Just as important to me is an obligation to mentor the next generation of producers to ensure that the important conversations continue. Reach me at alexanderdk@kcur.org.
