Seg. 1: Jeff Colyer On Becoming (And Remaining) Kansas Governor. Seg. 2: 'The Age of Eisenhower.'

KCUR 89.3
On the state's recent financial woes, Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer says, "I think we can lower taxes, make them simpler overall and meet our obligations."

Segment 1: Kansas governor discusses his transition to power, his election campaign, and the challenges facing his state.

Four months ago, then-Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer stepped into the position vacated by then-Gov. Sam Brownback. Today, he sat down for a wide-ranging conversation that covered school funding, the Kansas Department for Children and Families, a newly-enacted adoption statute, and his campaign to win the governorship without aggressively challenging rival Republican Kris Kobach.

Segment 2, beginning at 26:39: Recently declassified and released papers from the Eisenhower Library raise historians' estimation of the 34th president.

Often remembered as the president with a golf club in his hand, Dwight D. Eisenhower accomplished an amazing balancing act during his administration, chronicled in the book "The Age of Eisenhower: America and the World in the 1950s." The author explained how Ike's efforts behind the scenes maintained world peace, thwarted McCarthyism and allowed civil rights to expand in America.

William Hitchcock will discuss 'The Age of Eisenhower' at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6, at the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum, 500 W. Highway 24, Independence, Missouri 64050. The event is free but requires an RSVP. For more information, go to TrumanLibraryInstitute.org.
