TEDxKC: Defy Impossible

What can be accomplished when an idea that seems impossible is pursued despite the odds? That's the question being answered at this year's TEDxKC event.

On Tuesday's Up to Date, three of the participants from TEDxKC join Steve Kraske for a conversation on innovation and risk-taking. From finding value for the user in innovative technology to empowering girls of color to become innovators in STEM fields, we discover what drives visionary individuals to "defy impossible."

HEAR IN KC: This year's TEDxKC begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 20, at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are sold out, but you can stream the event live.

Guests

  • Kimberly Bryant is an engineer who founded Black Girls Code to introduce programming and technology to a new generation of coders; coders who will become builders of technological innovation and of their own futures.
  • Jared Ficklin is a Fellow at frog design. He favors effective over expensive and form following emotion. When not engaged at frog, Jared is co-director of the Austin Public Skatepark Action Committee and advocates for public skate parks that create innovative infrastructure and engage culture and build community.
  • Mike Lundgren is Director of Innovation Strategy for Kansas City-based marketing firm VML.  Since 2009 Mike has been active in the TED community and is the founding curator of TEDxKC, one of the largest independent TED events in the world.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers. Reach me at steve@kcur.org or on Twitter @stevekraske.
As senior producer of Up To Date, I want our listeners to hear familiar and new voices that shine light on the issues and challenges facing the myriad communities KCUR serves, and to expose our audiences to the wonderful and the creative in the Kansas City area. Just as important to me is an obligation to mentor the next generation of producers to ensure that the important conversations continue. Reach me at alexanderdk@kcur.org.
