Missouri to honor same-sex joint income tax returns

Gov. Jay Nixon announced Thursday that Missouri would honor joint tax returns of same-sex couples who married in states where those marriages are recognized.

Republican leadership in Jefferson City expressed outrage, accusing Nixon of ignoring the state constitution and the will of the voters.

Nixon calls for truce with Kansas on economic border war

The governor also called for a moratorium on the business tax incentives “border war” in the Kansas City area. Nixon said he had been talking with Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback about a temporary truce.

Republican leaders in Jefferson City called it a power grab and said what Missouri really needs is lower taxes on all businesses.

Medicaid expansion thwarted again in Jefferson City

The Republican chair a of Senate committee meeting on the future of Missouri Medicaid refused to consider expanding the program with federal money. Sen. Gary Romine insisted that Medicaid must be reformed first.

The final report recommends moving more low-income families into a managed care system.

Blue ribbon panel votes to continue state control of police

A Kansas City committee appointed by Mayor Sly James voted 13 to 12 not to seek local control of the police department, but endorsed expanding the state-appointed board.

Southwest Airlines executive has reservations about single-terminal idea

A Southwest Airlines executive let it be known that his company does not want a brand-new single-terminal system at KCI. He says that would triple their costs here.

Chiefs' Bowe arrested, but not suspended

As the Chiefs got ready for the big game with Denver, wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was arrested in Riverside, Mo. and charged with marijuana possession. Coach Andy Reid said Bowe will still play in this week's game. Bowe's attorneys say he is innocent.

Health care act sign-ups low in Missouri, Kansas

Like the rest of the nation has had a low rate of actual health insurance purchases through the website-plagued Affordable Care Act. In Missouri, 751 and 371 Kansans.

Appeals court rules diocese not liable in sex abuse suit

A Missouri appeals court ruled that the Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese is not liable in a civil suit alleging sexual abuse. Among other points, the defense had emphasized that the incidents did not take place on church property.

Ferguson released, will not be re-prosecuted

Ryan Ferguson, who served 10 years for a Columbia, Mo. murder before two alleged witnesses recanted, was released after a court finding that prosecutors had withheld other evidence. Attorney General Koster says Ferguson will not be re-prosecuted.
