He stood alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. in the fight for civil rights, yet the name Bayard Rustin remains largely unknown. We hear the story of this important figure in history.

Guests:

  • Michael Benjamin Washington is the playwright of Blueprints to Freedom: An Ode to Bayard Rustin as well as the actor who portrays Rustin.
  • D. Rashaan Gilmore currently manages “Project I Am,” a groundbreaking HIV/AIDS awareness and stigma reduction program for the Kansas City Care Clinic.

'Blueprints to Freedom: An Ode to Bayard Rustin' is playing now on the Copaken Stage and runs through November 15.  For tickets and information, visit www.kcrep.org.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers. Reach me at steve@kcur.org or on Twitter @stevekraske.
