MAC AWARDS $5000 GRANT TO
UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI-KANSAS CITY / KCUR-FM
Multimedia Arts on KCUR

KANSAS CITY – July 31, 2009
The University of Missouri-Kansas City has been awarded a $5000 grant from the Missouri Arts Council (MAC).  The award is designated specifically for KCUR 89.3 FM, National Public Radio’s Kansas City affiliate, operated on the campus of UMKC.  The award was announced in July.

The grant is part of a $7 million package that MAC awarded to non-profit organizations throughout the state.  The focus of the grants is to support various programs involved in the distribution of arts education and performance in Missouri.

KCUR Radio will use the award to expand and enhance the public radio station’s on-air arts coverage through the pairing of twelve feature stories with interactive slideshows (photos and audio) on the station’s web site.  The stories will air monthly (or bi-monthly) as a local insert during NPR’s Morning Edition, one of the most popular programs on KCUR-FM.  The two areas of focus will be:
World Arts across Kansas City: A comprehensive look at how the visual and performing arts are employed among the Kansas City region’s various ethnic communities.

Theater Deconstructed: An in-depth look at the various jobs and professions that can be found within the theatrical arts.  The stories will feature the collaborative artists that make a play or musical possible.

“The arts are playing an integral role in reviving the state’s economy by attracting tourists, providing thousands of jobs, enhancing education and strengthening our communities overall, to overcome these difficult economic times,” said Beverly Strohmeyer, MAC executive director.

KCUR 89.3 FM has been Kansas City’s public radio station since 1957.  The station broadcasts 24 hours a day in a 90-mile radius of Kansas City and provides an array of news, talk, music and entertainment to the community.  The station’s audio stream, archived local programming, and talk show podcasts are available at www.kcur.org.  KCUR is a service of the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
