KCUR News Director Frank Morris and Former Health Reporter Kelley Weiss Win Regional Murrow Awards

KANSAS CITY, MO (2008-04-15) The Radio-Television News Directors Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Murrow's pursuit of excellence in journalism embodies the spirit of the awards that carry his name. Murrow Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the broadcast news profession.

This year KCUR News brought home four awards.

Kelley Weiss, KCUR Health Reporter, Wins NAMI-KC Media Award of the Year

KANSAS CITY, MO (2007-08-11) Weiss spent months investigating mental health facilities in Missouri and found as many as 68 cited violations for one facility in the Kansas City area. The violations include medication errors, lack of oversight, unsanitary conditions and mismanagement of residents' funds. At least five facilities were cited for resident's deaths. The resulting investigative series "Corruption and Neglect" aired in September.

Heart of America Awards


KANSAS CITY, MO (2007-06-11) KCUR-FM won Radio Station of the Year, and top honors in two categories, including talk show and feature reporting, when the Heart of America journalism awards were handed out Saturday, June 9, 2007.

The contest was sponsored by the Kansas City Press Club and honored writers and photographers at large and small papers and radio and television stations across the Midwest.

Radio Talk Show
First Place: Steve Kraske, Stephen Steigman, Tamar Breslauer, KCUR-FM, for "Up To Date." Judges said: "Creative, good reporting style, refreshing approach, engaging personality. Most pertinently, the variety of samples demonstrates how wide-ranging the producers intend to go. (We want some recipes for Chinese - American cuisine that we can try to replicate. Our tongues are hanging out.)

Third Place: Walt Bodine, KCUR-FM, on "The Walt Bodine Show."

First Place: Kelley Weiss, KCUR-FM, "Hospital Bridges Gap Between Muslim Patients and Doctors
Second Place: Laura Ziegler, KCUR-FM, "Buck O'Neil Obituary"

KCUR-FM also won Radio Station of the Year by accumulating the most points from winning awards in individual categories.
