"Train to 2010" Explores Hope in Present-Day South Africa

When it was announced that South Africa would host soccer's World Cup this June, the pride of the country swelled in proportion to the amount of work necessary to bring the infrastructure up to that of previous host countries.

Kansas City, MO – That journey is the subject of a new play commissioned by UMKC called "Train to 2010." As KCUR's Steve Walker reports, it involved collaborations between local theater artists and those based half-way across the globe.

Retiring Nelson-Atkins Director/CEO Reflects on Legacy

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art's Director and CEO Marc Wilson retires June 2010. He's the museum's fourth director, and it's a position he's held since 1982.

Kansas City, MO – The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art's Director/CEO Marc Wilson retires in June after 28 years in the post. Wilson's one of the longest serving museum directors, and only the fourth director of the museum since it opened in 1933.

Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Names New Director

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art recently named its fifth director, Juli?n Zugazagoitia. Marc F. Wilson, the museum's Director/CEO for nearly three decades, announced last year that he would retire effective June 1, 2010.

Kansas City, MO – Mexico-born and Paris-educated museum director, scholar and curator Juli?n Zugazagoitia (pronounced HOO-lian SZU-ga-sa-GOY-tee-uh) has been named the fifth director for the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

Muralist Brings Work Indoors for Exhibition

Mural artist Alexander Austin has made his mark on the outside of buildings across Kansas City. There's a tribute to performer Michael Jackson at 18th and Troost; larger than life musicians and baseball players in Kansas City's history in the Power & Light district; and a memorial to civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr. at Linwood and Troost.

Native Traditions Meet 21st Century in New Production

As Lawrence, Kansas is the home of Haskell Indian Nations University, it would make sense that the city would be the site of the American Indian Repertory Theatre. Established in 2006, it's just one of a handful of theaters in the United States devoted to Native American artists and plays. And it's the only such theatre in the Midwest.

Local Production of "Rent" Benefits Youth

For the past couple of seasons, the Jewish Community Center has been delivering what it calls "theatre of a conscience." Each production links up with local groups or charities that fit the show's themes.
