Heart to Heart International Sending Mobile Clinic to Joplin

Kansas City, Mo. – A suburban Kansas City nonprofit organization is mobilizing to help storm-ravaged communities in Kansas and Missouri. Heart to Heart International specializes in providing medical services and supplies.

CEO Andre T. Butler says Heart to Heart already has a medical assessment team on the ground in Joplin, Missouri. Based on the team's report, the group is sending its Mobile Health Clinic, which contains a waiting room, scrub room, two exam rooms and an onboard pharmacy.

Reading Citizens Cope With Tornado Damage

Topeka, KS – Residents in eastern Kansas are clearing debris Monday after a series of storms brought tornadoes and damaging winds Saturday night. One tornado heavily damaged much of the small town of Reading, about 50 miles south of Topeka. KPR's Stephen Koranda has more on the twister, which left one man dead and many of the town's 250 residents homeless.

Tornado Devastates Joplin

Joplin, Mo. – [Updated: June 9, 2011: 151 people died from injuries. More than 900 people were injured in the storm.] Authorities say at least 89 have died in the massive tornado that struck Joplin. City manager Mark Rohr announced the number at a pre-dawn news conference outside the wreckage of a hospital that took a direct hit from Sunday's storm. Rohr said the twister cut a path nearly six miles long and more than a half-mile wide through the center of town.

Joplin Residents Assess Damage, Continue Searches

JOPLIN, Mo. – A massive tornado that tore through the southwest Missouri city of Joplin killed at least 89 people, but authorities warned that the death toll could climb Monday as search and rescuers continued their work at sunrise.

Businesses Stay Open in Blizzard

Kansas City, Mo. – The enormous winter storm continued pummeling the Midwest, closing roads and forcing thousands of flight cancellations as it lumbered eastward. By evening most of Kansas City was shut down. But a number of businesses, like this little hardware store in Midtown, welcomed a steady stream of customers staggering in out of the blizzard.
