UMKC Students Mentor Ivanhoe Neighborhood Children

By Anthony Tao

Kansas City, MO – Studies from leading researchers in the field of education show that mentoring programs have only modest effects on students, and in some instances can even hurt the kids involved. But one Kansas City, Missouri neighborhood is betting on results--a partnership between the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council and Swope Community Leaders recently launched the Ivanhoe House Project. UMKC will place four students inside the Ivanhoe neighborhood for two years, where they will mentor kids while continuing their studies. Anthony Tao reports on this new experiment in community mentoring.
