Stop Snitching Messages in Rap Music

By Ty Chandler

Kansas City, MO – Since radio shock jock Don Imus used degrading terms to describe the Rutgers Women's Basketball Team, the focus has turned to hip hop and its often misogynistic and sexist lyrics. Everyone from Oprah to the NAACP have demanded rappers to clean up their lyrics, but there is another message some hip hop artists send that could be even more damaging.

KCUR's Ty Chandler spoke to
Captain Rich Lockhart of the Kansas City Police Department and asked how the police counter this stop snitching message here in Kansas City. She also spoke to Octavia Southall, executive director of Gatekeepers, a faith based community outreach organization. Southall has found some people would rather tell her about a crime than police.

This story was produced for KC Currents.
