The City Council adopted a resolution yesterday, directing the city managers office to set up a vacant buildings taskforce in the next 90 days. Councilman Terry Riley sponsored the measure. Riley says he's worried about the blight and safety hazards created by the empty homes and building. The panel will be charged with finding the causes of the vacancies and making recommendations for dealing with them. Possible suggestions include educating landlords and renters about upkeep and maintenance and funneling more money to renovations. The taskforce will include members from city departments, neighborhood associations, and the real estate industry. The report is expected to be completed within a year. Maria Carter, KCUR News.
