Area Mayors Back Regional Light Rail Plan

By Maria Carter

Kansas City, Missouri – A regional transit plan got support from leaders North of the River on Monday. KCUR's Maria Carter reports.

Six mayors from Platte County announced they would back a regional light rail plan. Kansas City Mark Funkhouser joined the other mayor's in a press conference held in front of a restored street car at union station. Kansas City voters approved a light rail plan stretching from Swope Park to the airport, but critics have questioned the route and funding. Funkhouser say that plan is quote dead and it's time to take a regional approach.

Mark Funkhouser: "I think the suburban voters are just as smart as the Kansas City voters, and if this is going to work for the Kansas City voters, it's going to."

The Platte County mayor's said the economic growth from light rail would benefit the entire area. Detractors of the voter approved plan have submitted a petition to the Kansas City Council to repeal the measure.
