The Kansas City, Missouri City Council chose Ardie Bland, who has practiced as an attorney in the municipal court for more than 10 years, as a new municipal judge. The council also raised parking meter rates downtown to $1 an hour and approved raises for city employees -- and for themselves, after council member Deb Herman noted that the increases were set years ago and the city charter says no council can increase or decrease its own salaries.
Incentives designed to lure a Bombardier airliner plant to Kansas City defeated passed the Missouri House, but the Senate defeated its version of the tax-credit bill. The MissouriHouse also defeated an attempt to change the way judges are nominated in Missouri.Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius voted a second bill allowing construction of coal-fired power plants, noting its similarity to the original bill.Jayhawk championship basketball team members Brandon Rush and Darrell Arthur held a news conference this afternoon to announce their decisions to enter the NBA Draft.
