Kansas City, MO –

  • The Kansas City, Missouri City Council chose Ardie Bland, who has practiced as an attorney in the municipal court for more than 10 years, as a new municipal judge.
  • The council also raised parking meter rates downtown to $1 an hour and approved raises for city employees -- and for themselves, after council member Deb Herman noted that the increases were set years ago and the city charter says no council can increase or decrease its own salaries.
  • Incentives designed to lure a Bombardier airliner plant to Kansas City defeated passed the Missouri House, but the Senate defeated its version of the tax-credit bill.
  • The MissouriHouse also defeated an attempt to change the way judges are nominated in Missouri.
  • Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius voted a second bill allowing construction of coal-fired power plants, noting its similarity to the original bill.
  • Jayhawk championship basketball team members Brandon Rush and Darrell Arthur held a news conference this afternoon to announce their decisions to enter the NBA Draft.

  • KCUR prides ourselves on bringing local journalism to the public without a paywall — ever.
