Kansas City, MO – At one time Sumner High School was a neighborhood school in Douglas-Sumner, in KCK. It was built at the beginning of last century, when schools were segregated - and Sumner was an all-black school. But in 1978, Sumner desegregated. It's now a magnet school, attracting applicants from throughout Wyandotte County. But a few of those students have been trying to reconnect with the neighborhood. Senior Melissa Villalobos, junior Kayla Barnes, and Damon Broadus of Greater Kansas City LISC, a community development organization, recently came by KCUR to talk about the Douglas and Sumner Heritage Project.
