KCUR Evening Newscast 6-20-08

Kansas City, MO –

  • Regional leaders, struggling with how a regional transit system would be governed, cast serious doubt on whether any plan can be ready for a public vote in November. Also, the mayor of North Kansas City questioned the cost-benefit ratio of transit for his community.
  • The smoking ban Kansas City Missouri voters approved in April will go into effect at midnight tonight. Judge John O'Malley has lifted his temporary restraining order on the ordinance. A lawsuit filed by bar owners continues.
  • Amtrak riders between Kansas City and Chicago still are taking the bus part of the way because of flooding. Full train service could resume tomorrow (Saturday).

  • Congress just eliminated federal funding for KCUR, but public radio is for the people.
