Walker's Three to See: Potiche

KCUR Arts Reporter Steve Walker shares his top movie picks of the week. The mission of French director Francois Ozon's every film (past titles include 8 Women and Swimming Pool) seems to be one simple dictum: have fun. His latest is definitely that - a comedic period piece set in the ticky-tacky 1970s starring the Hepburn and Tracy of French cinema, Catherine Deneuve and Gerard Depardieu. She plays Suzanne, the chipper but clueless wife of an umbrella factory mogul who takes over the company after he medically implodes. No one, not even her family, is initially in her corner except the town's mayor (Depardieu), with whom she had an affair in their youth. But she rises to the challenge and eventually feels empowered as opposed to the feelings she'd bottled as a "trophy wife" (the loose translation of the title). It's colorful, wacky and thin as a crepe but worth a look due to the work of the lead pair, who are never less than great.
