"You can suspend a kid... but if you never address the root cause, you haven't fixed the problem," says Dr. Mark Bedell on strict punishments for minor infractions.

Kansas City Public Schools has shifted its code of conduct away from strict discipline, and a local Astrologist gives Steve Kraske a reading.

Segment 1, beginning at 1:00: Kansas City Public Schools is undertaking a substantial shift in the way that it disciplines its students.

Last week, an adjusted code of conduct was approved by the school board with a unanimous vote. This move comes as Black students in Missouri face suspension four times as often as their white peers. The superintendent of KCPS explains why this decision was needed to improve educational and personal outcomes for children in the district.

Segment 2, beginning at 29:50: Astrology, tarot, and other esoteric customs have surged in popularity in recent years. The pandemic increased that interest further.

An astrologist explains why she believes these customs give people a sense of clarity, and helps people build the confidence to enact change in their lives. Plus, Up To Date host Steve Kraske receives his very own reading.
