newEar, the contemporary chamber ensemble, opens its 19th season with a concert exploring themes of time, loss and remembrance. Two works on the program were written in response to September 11th.

Kansas City, Mo. – Composer Jim Mobberley's "Voices in Memoriam" reflects how memory changes with time. Mobberley, Curator's Professor of Music at the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, was inspired to write the piece after a visit to New York on October 11th, 2001, a month after the terrorist attacks.
Mobberley visited the FDNY memorial in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, which had been transformed into a tribute to the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. "There's an opening section...and there are 343 notes in that section," says Mobberley. "And at that point, the last note hits and everything about the piece changes."
