Kansas City, MO – Computer literacy is quickly becoming a necessity of modern life. But for children growing up without a computer in the home, it's hard to gain the ease and skill with technology that's necessary to compete. In what's called the digital divide - Black and Latino children around the country are less likely to have computers and access to the internet than white children.
The Black Family Technology Awareness Week is a national program funded by IBM to talk about the value of technology in the black community. Lewis Walker helped bring the event to Kansas City. He works for AT&T and is a member of the Community Network of African American Telecommunications Professionals.
Public libraries are one of the main places people who don't have computers at home go to connect to the world wide web. Davin Jackson stopped by the Plaza branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Thursday to see who was logging in.
