KCUR is seeking an empathetic, enthusiastic self-starter to cover education in metro Kansas City and the bi-state region. KCUR’s education reporter will research, pitch, report, edit and file long-form features that adhere to NPR’s standards and practices. The reporter will create web and social media content on education topics, participate in community engagement efforts and appear as a guest on our talk programming to discuss education topics.
The reporter must be able to multitask, managing daily and long-term assignments in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment. They must have a demonstrated ability to take direction and work collaboratively with various personalities as well as a commitment to public media and nonprofit journalism in a changing news environment. This position will report to the News Director.
- Generates original stories covering education in Kansas City and the bi-state region, including equity, social-emotional learning, teaching, education technology, school finance, housing policy and COVID-19 learning loss. Identifies trends and developing stories and pursues enterprise investigative work for publication and broadcast. The beat is primarily Pre K-12, with some reporting on colleges, universities and post-secondary training.
- Develops and maintains relationships with students, parents and teachers, as well as state and federal education officials, district administrators and other policymakers. Tracks local, state and national policies as they impact kids in Kansas City classrooms.
- Researches, pitches, writes, reports, edits and voices a wide variety of stories and series for morning and afternoon news magazines, local talk shows, and national programs (as appropriate).
- Regularly contributes spots to daily newscasts covering education-related developments.
- Contributes to KCUR’s website and social media platforms, including audio, text, extended interviews, photos, etc.
- Serves as a resource for the talk shows on education issues, including identifying sources and opportunities for additional coverage, conducting two-ways and interviews and occasionally appearing as a guest.
- Engages the community around KCUR’s education reporting via social media and public events.
- Participates in local policy discussions and forums as appropriate.
- Collaborates with other education reporters in Kansas and Missouri as appropriate.
- Participates in all assigned fund-raising and outreach activities, on air and off.
- Other duties as assigned, including covering breaking, non-education news as needed.
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
- At least 2-4 years of work experience in a public media or news organization.
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related field is a plus
- Excellent writing skills, proven news judgment and journalistic integrity
- Demonstrated expertise and interest in covering education topics.
- Ability to cover breaking news as well as report through long-form, innovative storytelling.
- Experience operating a variety of broadcast equipment including audio boards, digital editing systems (e.g. Adobe Audition), field recording units and other production equipment.
- Experience producing content for the web and social platforms.
- Ability and willingness to work a varied schedule.
Full Time/Part Time
This is a full time, benefit eligible position.
$47,476 - $55,000 annually, commensurate with experience and education.
