Kids are gathering up school supplies and packing up their backpacks at this time of the year. Kansas City Missouri schools begin classes this week, and there's a brand new group of 50 teachers getting their classrooms ready. They're from the national program Teach for America - which places top college graduates in under-served schools for two-year teaching stints. This is the program's first year in Kansas City, KCUR's Sylvia Maria Gross caught up with a new teacher, Joe Fox, in his new classroom.
Fox grew up on Long Island, moved to Nebraska, and then to the Kansas City area, where he went to middle and high school. He just graduated from a small liberal arts college in Iowa. And now he's back, roaming the halls of Troost Elementary School as a fourth grade teacher.
