Kansas City, MO – U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis stopped in Kansas City today, where she announced a new round of grant money for job training programs in the health care industry. KCUR's Elana Gordon has more.

Solis says 220 million dollars in stimulus funds are now available for health care training programs. During a visit to KU Medical Center, she said her agency predicts the health industry will be one of the main employers in the U.S. over the next few years.

SOLIS: "We have a projection, at least in the next possible decade, that we can create three million jobs in the health careers area."

Solis also applauded KU's efforts to address rural health care needs, through its student recruitment initiatives and telemedicine program. Her visit is part of the Obama administration's rural tour this week, which includes stops in Iowa and Louisana.

After going to KU Medical Center, Solis also visited with local Hispanic leaders at the Guadalupe Center.

Funding for health care coverage on KCUR has been provided by the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City.
