It's a tough year for Democrats, especially in the race for Kansas governor. After Governor Mark Parkinson decided against running for election, State Senator Tom Holland stepped in as the Democratic candidate.
He faces a hard battle against the Republican nominee, Senator Sam Brownback, whose strong name recognition, national experience and substantially larger war chest contribute to why the New York Times' FiveThirtyEight blog says Brownback has a 100% chance of winning.
Steve Kraske welcomed State Senator Tom Holland to discuss his candidacy, and why he's running, despite the long odds.

Tom Holland ran for the Kansas House in 2002 as a Democrat to "protect our schools."
Holland served the families of Kansas' 10th House District from 2003-2009. In 2009, he became a State Senator representing the 3rd District in rural Douglas, Leavenworth and Jefferson Counties. He presently serves as the ranking minority member on the Senate Assessment and Taxation, Business & Labor and Commerce committees and also serves on the Financial Institutions and Insurance committee.
As a legislator, Tom received recognition in 2003 from the Kansas Disability Caucus for leadership in addressing the need to fund programs for people with disabilities. He serves as advisory council co-chair of the Kansas Small Business Development Center and also serves on the board of directors for both Kansas, Inc. and KTEC.
