Kansas Signs Deal to Develop New Medicaid Eligibility System

By Stephen Koranda, Kansas Public Radio

TOPEKA, Ks. – The state of Kansas is working on a new way to determine who is eligible for Medicaid and other assistance programs.

A company will develop a new eligibility system for medical, food and cash assistance programs. Applications will be submitted electronically, and the system will double-check the information.

Andy Allison, with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, says the new process will be faster and more efficient.

"The process now for verificaiton, for working an eligiblity case, it's all centered around a caseworker who right now is overworked and overburdened," Allison says.

The system will cost around $85 million to develop. The federal government will pay for around 90 percent of the cost. The new system is slated to go online in 2013.
