KCUR Director of Institutional Giving and Communications - #74422


KCUR is seeking an individual with demonstrated experience in communicating with and raising funds from foundation, corporate, and individual donors to support its mission, programming and operations.  KCUR wants someone with a passion for communicating about and raising funds to support public media.

The Director will be responsible for working with KCUR’s development director and the UMKC Foundation to develop and expand foundation, government and corporate giving for KCUR.  The Director will manage a portfolio of prospects, nurturing current relationships and cultivating new ones.  The Director also will oversee institutional and external communications for KCUR.  The Director will assist with special events.

Successful candidates must have a documented record of successful solicitation and stewardship of foundation and corporate donors; experience in cultivating individual donors; excellent research and communication skills; strong knowledge of the programming and priorities of KCUR; and the ability to develop and maintain relationships with a wide variety of people.


  • Plan and implement annual program of identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding foundation, government and corporate contributors.
  • Plan and implement annual external communications plan for KCUR across multiple audiences and constituents.
  • Consult with KCUR’s senior staff to identify specific fundraising projects.
  • Work with UMKC Foundation to research, identify and qualify prospects for foundation, government and corporate giving.
  • Establish and cultivate effective relationships with foundation and corporation giving prospects.
  • Lead the development of grant proposals to foundations, government agencies and corporations.
  • Ensure that the terms and conditions of awarded grants are met by KCUR, including interim and final reports.
  • Direct and manage communications and stewardship for government, foundation, and corporate donors.
  • Coordinate cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities with KCUR senior staff, UMKC Foundation, and KCUR’s advisory board members.
  • Oversee institutional funding strategies for regional reporting collaborations such as Harvest Public Media and the Kansas News Service.
  • Work with KCUR development director to develop close relationships, cultivate, and solicit existing and potential major donors for annual support and planned gifts.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of capital solicitation campaigns for major projects.
  • Support and participate in additional fund-raising and outreach activities, on air and off.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in fundraising, communications or a closely related field.


  • Five years of fundraising or communications experience in public or nonprofit media, working with volunteer leadership to raise funds.
  • Four years of experience in grant writing with a documented record of successful proposals.
  • Two years of experience in major and/or planned giving.
  • Proficiency in fundraising software.
  • Capital campaign experience and familiarity with Kansas City’s philanthropic landscape are a plus.


This position reports to the Director of Development.


This position is full-time.  Salary is commensurate with experience.
