This week on Cyprus Avenue, a listen to some new releases from singer/songwriters. Featuring Jim White, Fred Eaglesmith and more.
Chip Taylor boasts the longest career of the artists featured on this week's program. His career bridged the transition in American popular music in the first half of the twentieth century from music written by a production team and performed by others to music being written and performed by one artist. Taylor first found fame writing hits like "Wild Thing" and "Angel in the Morning," to be sung by other artists. Then in the 1970s, he began releasing his solo work, and has continued since, with a new album out this year with The New Ukrainians.
In the tradition of singer/songwriters like Taylor, this week's other featured musicians are a varied bunch with roots in country, folk, rock, and bluegrass. Each wields a guitar, but they hail from different regions in the U.S., Canada, and England, and each has differing influences and a unique sound.
