On-Demand Producer — KCUR 89.3 #71656


The Opportunity

KCUR 89.3 is seeking a creative producer to set the conversational agenda for the Kansas City metro area in unique on-demand podcasts and audio offerings. This full-time producer will have their finger on the pulse of local and national culture and news, develop timely and engaging podcasts, and find compelling voices in our communities beyond prominent newsmakers and experts.

The Show and Station

KCUR Studios is a new on-demand network developing new and diverse shows for the KC metro and beyond. KCUR is a dynamic and rapidly-expanding news organization with a committed following in a city that’s family–friendly, fun, tech-savvy and culturally rich.

Basic Function and Responsibility

The producer will work closely and collaboratively with the KCUR Studios team to formulate show ideas and concepts, research shows, screen and book guests, and write promos. The producer will be responsible for the production of timely on-demand podcasts. This person must have the ability to remain calm during the demands of audio production, and to work on diverse projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline oriented environment. The successful candidate will have an ability to take direction and work collaboratively with various personalities, and an enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment.

Characteristic Duties

⦁ Produce on-demand audio with hosts and production teams, including directing, screening interviews, and managing social media for KCUR Studios Podcasts.
⦁ Research and pitch show topics during weekly editorial meetings.
⦁ Coordinate the dates of segments and podcasts.
⦁ Identify, contact, assess the suitability of, and book guests.
⦁ Provide hosts with background research, potential interview questions and feedback on scripts.
⦁ Collaborate on projects with KCUR and the news department.
⦁ Handle audience and guest communications for podcasts.
⦁ Work with host to create audio and text promos and audio billboards for podcasts as well as on social media.
⦁ Contribute show-related content to KCUR’s website and social media platforms, including audio, text, extended interviews, photos, etc.
⦁ Participate in all assigned fund-raising and outreach activities, on air and off.
⦁ May oversee the work of interns.
⦁ Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

⦁ A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
⦁ At least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

⦁ Two years of work experience in a radio, news, or public media organization
⦁ Two years of work experience producing podcasts for On-demand listeners
⦁ Good news judgment.
⦁ Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
⦁ Ability and willingness to work a varied schedule.
⦁ Knowledge of the Kansas City region, or a proven ability to develop a strong network and command of a new city, including contacts in a variety of fields, especially the arts.
⦁ Experience operating a variety of broadcast equipment including audio boards, digital editing systems (e.g. Adobe Audition), field recording units, and other production equipment.
⦁ Experience producing content for the web and social platforms.
⦁ Advanced audio editing and production skills with Adobe Audition
⦁ Ability to record in the field and write broadcast copy incorporating tape.
⦁ Experience with live event production.
⦁ A nuanced understanding of and commitment to incorporating diverse ethnic, cultural and political perspectives on the show.


This position reports to the KCUR Director of Marketing.


$47,476 - $50,000.
