Bluesman DC Bellamy

Blues musician Gregory "DC" Bellamy grew up on Chicago's West Side, but he's made Kansas City his home for the past several years.

By Chuck Haddix (host of KCUR's The Fish Fry), edited by Michael Byars and Laura Spencer

Kansas City, MO – As a child, "DC" Bellamy says his musical influences ranged from gospel to jazz to classical music. But, he says it was the rhythm and blues scene that probably had the greatest impact on his musical style. KCUR Fish Fry host Chuck Haddix talked to Bellamy recently about his background.

D-C Bellamy can be heard Saturday night at the 7th Annual Kansas City Kansas Street Blues Festival, June 23, 24 and 25, Kaw Point Park.

To hear an extended version of Bellamy's recent interview with KCUR's Fish Fry host Chuck Haddix, listen here .

Kansas City is known for its style of jazz, influenced by the blues, as the home of Walt Disney’s first animation studio and the headquarters of Hallmark Cards. As one of KCUR’s arts reporters, I want people here to know a wide range of arts and culture stories from across the metropolitan area. I take listeners behind the scenes and introduce them to emerging artists and organizations, as well as keep up with established institutions. Send me an email at lauras@kcur.org or follow me on Twitter @lauraspencer.
In 1984, Chuck Haddix aka Chuck Haddock joined the staff of KCUR as a jazz producer. The next year, he began producing the Fish Fry. You can reach him at haddixc@umsystem.edu.
