Kansas Third In Nation For Charitable Giving, Study Says

Kansas is ranked in the top ten most charitable states in the country, according to a study released by the personal finance website WalletHub.

Kansas tied narrowly with Idaho to rank third in the nation. Utah came in first place and South Dakota came in second.

According to the publishers, the purpose of the study was to foster holiday competition between the states to increase their charitable activities.

WalletHub ranked the states using eight criteria:

  • Volunteer rate
  • Percentage of adjusted gross income that is donated
  • Percentage of the population who claim to have donated money
  • Percentage of taxpayers who donated money to charity
  • Growth in charitable giving (2012 compared to 2006)
  • Median contribution to charity (dollar Amount)
  • Number of public charities per capita

Out of the categories, Kansas only ranked in the top five for volunteer rate, but still managed to claim it's shared third place slot.
Missouri came in  as the 21st most charitable state. Lots of Missourians claim to donate money, but there was a 41 percent difference between those reported that they donated money, and the amount of donated money recorded after taxes.

Nevada came in last among the 50 states, but showed promise. The Silver state had the most growth in charitable giving between 2006 and 2012.
