Meet The Kansas City Woman Working To Exonerate The Wrongly Convicted

The podcast Serial got people hooked on resolving a single murder case. A young man was convicted in the 1990s on what looks like flimsy evidence; the podcast walks listeners through a maddening quest for the truth. The Midwest Innocence Project's Tricia Bushnell explains how defense lawyers use similar techniques to exonerate the wrongly convicted on a larger scale. Serial represents one case; the waiting list for cases to be reviewed by The Midwest Innocence Project has 600 names on it.

People don't make cameos in news stories; the human story is the story, with characters affected by news events, not defined by them. As a columnist and podcaster, I want to acknowledge what it feels like to live through this time in Kansas City, one vantage point at a time. Together, these weekly vignettes form a collage of daily life in Kansas City as it changes in some ways, and stubbornly resists change in others.
