Mizzou Softball Eliminated In Regional Title Game

This year marks 50 years since a sports team at the University of Missouri finished runner-up for a national championship.

The Tiger baseball team finished second at the College World Series. In recent years, the Mizzou softball team has come the closest, but saw its season come to an end Sunday.

Missouri advanced to the regional title game Sunday in the winner’s bracket against Nebraska, and seemed positioned to reach the best-of-three super regionals for the seventh straight year. But Nebraska won twice, 11-4 and 8-1, to oust the Tigers from the tournament. Another attempt at a national title for Mizzou thwarted.

Athletics director Mike Alden, however, is optimistic.

“You know it has been a long time, but hopefully we keep positioning our teams to be there at the end,” said Alden.

All was not lost with the softball team’s elimination. The Mizzou men’s golf team over the weekend advanced to the national tournament.

Sports have an economic and social impact on our community and, as a sports reporter, I go beyond the scores and statistics. I also bring the human element to the sports figures who have a hand in shaping the future of not only their respective teams but our town. Reach me at gregechlin@aol.com.
