Refugee Kids In Kansas City

Kansas City is home to lots of refugee children and their families, who face trying transitions to new countries, a new language, new customs and new schools. On this edition of Up to Date, we examine their experiences and find out who helps them.

Guests:

  • Martin Okpareke is the outreach coordinator for Jewish Vocational Services.
  • Tshulthrim Zangmo is a refugee student from Bhutan, who attended Northeast High School in Kansas City.
  • Reneé Silverman is the producer and director of Refugee Kids: One Small School Takes on the World.

The Kansas City Public Library is screening Refugee Kids Jan. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Plaza branch, 4801 Main St., Kansas City, Missouri.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.
