Seg. 1: Guns And Schools. Seg. 2: Refugee Quilts

Segment 1: Is the conversation around guns, schools and violence changing?

Teens in Florida have been galvanized to speak out about mass shootings at American schools. But what is happening here? Have our thoughts shifted about school shootings?

Segment 2, beginning at 39:40: Refugees in Kansas City find a new way to tell their stories.

Refugees in KC have been telling their stories through quilts. We hear how sewing and quilting have changed things for them in ways that go beyond self-expression.

1,000 Footsteps Tell The Story, an exhibit of these quilts, is at the Carter Art Center at Penn Valley Community College through March 8.

People don't make cameos in news stories; the human story is the story, with characters affected by news events, not defined by them. As a columnist and podcaster, I want to acknowledge what it feels like to live through this time in Kansas City, one vantage point at a time. Together, these weekly vignettes form a collage of daily life in Kansas City as it changes in some ways, and stubbornly resists change in others.
