Kansas City Mayor Sly James proposed on Monday a new 3/8th-cent sales tax to fund early childhood education.

Segment 1: Proposed 3/8th-cent sales tax could expand early childhood education.

In an effort to provide quality education to more of Kansas City's youth, Mayor Sly James has proposed a new sales tax that would fund pre-K schools. While almost everyone can agree access to pre-K education should be expanded, some residents have reservations about where the money to pay for it comes from and how it's collected.

Segment 2, beginning at 24:16: Becoming a world-class violinist in the face of extreme obstacles.

Augustin Hadelich dedicated most of his childhood to becoming a prodigal violinist but, after suffering severe burns in a fire, was told by some doctors that he'd never play again. Today, we spoke with the now-distinguished musician about his journey to defy expectations and become a Grammy-winning artist.

Augustin Hadelich performs with the Kansas City Symphony on June 15, 16, and 17, at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, 1601 Broadway Blvd., Kansas City, Missouri 64108. For more information, go to KCSymphony.org.
