Tony Aguirre Remembered

By Sylvia Maria Gross

Kansas City, MO – Tony Aguirre played almost every sport in high school. According to the Kansas City Star, he was almost drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals, despite being underage. But he wasn't too young to coach; he began volunteering with kids at age 17 and later became athletic director at the Guadalupe Center on Kansas City's West Side. For 60 years, he was a coach and mentor to the city's youth. Aguirre died unexpectedly Sunday at the age of 77. His daughter Sandy Aguirre Mayer told KCUR's Sylvia Maria Gross it's hard to find a Latino in Kansas City who wasn't mentored by her father.

Following Tony Aguirre's burial, the family will hold a reception Saturday, March 25 from 1 to 5pm at the West Side sports center named in his honor, the Tony Aguirre Community Center.
