Fred Phelps has been a lightning rod of controversy for decades. The late head of the Westboro Baptist Church, who famously picketed funerals of American soldiers and LGBT people, died Wednesday.

On Friday's Up to Date, we discuss the quandary media organizations have faced: How do you decide when events like this are truly newsworthy and when you’re just giving hate groups free publicity?

Guests:

  • Peggy Lowe, reporter at Harvest Public Media
  • Derek Donovan, public editor at the Kansas City Star
When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.
