Seg. 1: College Financial Insecurity | Seg. 2: Barista Pay Survey

Segment 1: The financial stress of college causes some students to struggle.

For college students who don't come from financial means, it can be difficult to survive on a college campus. We hear about how they try to stay afloat while also staying on top of classes.

  • Anthony Maly, Senior Program Manager, UMKC
  • Monsignor Stuart Swetland, Monsignor, Donnelly College
  • Maria Carter, News Director, KCUR

Segment 2, beginning at 37:30: A local coffee shop wants to know how much baristas make.

Oddly Correct has been surveying baristas in Kansas City to see if they make a liveable wage. Among other findings, their data reveals that managers tend to make less an hour than baristas.

People don't make cameos in news stories; the human story is the story, with characters affected by news events, not defined by them. As a columnist and podcaster, I want to acknowledge what it feels like to live through this time in Kansas City, one vantage point at a time. Together, these weekly vignettes form a collage of daily life in Kansas City as it changes in some ways, and stubbornly resists change in others. Staying mentally and physically healthy can be a lot of work — exercising, eating right and navigating our complicated medical system. As KCUR’s health and wellness reporter, I want to connect Kansas Citians with new and existing resources to improve their well-being and tell stories that inspire them to enjoy healthier lives.
