Up to Date's political pundits conduct a post-mortem on last night's election, look to the future, and try to sort out what it all means.
Steve Kraske welcomes University of Kansas political science professor Burdett Loomis, Kansas City Star political reporter Dave Helling, and KMBC-TV9 political reporter Micheal Mahoney to recap Tuesday's elections and predict how local, state, and federal government may rule over the next couple of years.
Additional Information: Burdett Loomis is a professor of political science at the University of Kansas. Loomis was director of administrative communication for former Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius in 2005 and interim director of KU's Dole Institute of Politics from 1997 to 2001. He has directed KU's Washington, D.C., and Topeka internship programs since the 1980s. Loomis is also director of the KU School of Law's Legislative Clinic, through which students intern with Kansas legislators during the legislative session. This spring, he was a Hall Center fellow at KU. Loomis was a Brookings Institution guest scholar in 1984, 1996 and 2000. In 1984, he directed the Congressional Management Project at American University in Washington, D.C., and edited "Setting Course," a guide for new members of Congress. Dave Helling is a multimedia reporter for The Kansas City Star. At, The Star Helling produces videos for the Web site Kansascity.com, as well as regular contributions to the print edition. During his time at the newspaper, Helling has covered major events such as the 2008 presidential election and the signing of the health care bill this past March. Before his time at The Star, Helling worked as an anchor and reporter for KCTV-5, the CBS-affiliate in Kansas City. He as received multiple awards including the Freedom on the Press Award from the ACLU, three Emmy nominations and a silver medal from the New York Film Festival.He produced the "Truthwatch" series of stories, examining claims made in political advertising. Micheal Mahoney started at KMBC in February of 1980. Before coming to Kansas City, he worked at the WOI-TV, the ABC affiliate in Des Moines-Ames, Iowa from 1978-1980. He was there 2 years, and during part of that time, he was the Des Moines bureau chief which means he was in charge of the coverage of the Iowa State government. Awards in television include a 1993 Emmy for spot news Coverage of the 1993 Flood. In 1981, Micheal received the Mall Dodson National Headliners Award for continued coverage of the Hyatt Regency Skywalks disaster. On July 17, 1981, he was the only reporter present at the moment the Hyatt Skywalks fell down, killing over 100 people in Kansas City. He appeared on "Nightline" with Ted Koppel that evening and stayed with the story for months afterwards, earning the Headliner Award.
