The Birds, The Bees, & The Teens

Unless one possesses a vast reservoir of undaunted cool, undertaking the sex talk with teens can be a challenge. Full of cringe-worthy questions and hot-button issues, many parents and mentors wonder what's appropriate for teens, how to approach sensitive topics, and what's the best way to keep teens safe from pregnancy and disease.

On Thursday's edition of Up to Date, psychologist Wes Crenshaw joins us to try and ease the awkward encounter between parents and teens. Discussing sex with your teen doesn’t need to be a sore subject, and with some pointers on how to approach the subject, talk with your teen, and get them the information that they need.

Dr. Wes is a Kansas Licensed Psychologist and Board Certified in Couples and Family Psychology (ABPP). He has served families in Lawrence and surrounding area since 1999 and owns Family Psychological Services in Lawrence. He is co-author of the Double Take column published weekly since 2004 and currently in Monday's GO! section of the Lawrence Journal World, and Dear Dr. Wes: Real Life Advice for Teens; and Real Life Advice for Parents of Teens based on eight years of columns. He received his PhD from the University of Kansas in 1994, was licensed in 1995 and founded an internship for doctoral students in Topeka in 1996. He co-founded the Family Therapy Institute Midwest in 1999 and served as its director until December 2010. Learn more at www.dr-wes.com.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.
