Better Evacuation Plans For Hurricane Victims

As Hurricane Katrina demonstrated seven years ago this week, the destruction wrought by hurricanes is evident not just in the storm's power, but also in poorly executed evacuation plans.

Next time on Up to Date, we continue our TEDxKC series with Robert Fogarty. Fogarty, the executive director of Evacuteer.org, devised an effective system of evacuation which utilizes volunteers.

Questions about disaster preparedness? You can post on this page or on KCUR's Facebook page, uptodate@kcur.org, or Tweet us @KCURUptoDate.TEDxKC will take place 6-9 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City. The event will belive-streamed, and due to demand, TEDxKC has announced a second showing of the event Aug. 29 at the Alamo Drafthouse in downtown Kansas City.Tickets for the second showing are $6.

Robert X. Fogarty is the co-founder evacuteer.org and founder of Dear World. He started evacuteer.org after assisting the City of New Orleans to evacuate 18,000 residents without cars in advance of Hurricane Gustav, the largest hurricane evacuation in U.S. history. In 2011, Fogarty started Dear World, a scalable version of Dear New Orleans, his for-profit photography venture for social good. Fogarty has photographed thousands, including Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Drew Brees, Academy Award Winner Susan Sarandon and NBA All Star Chris Paul. He graduated from the University of Oregon School of Journalism in 2005.
