We all know that texting while driving often results in accidents, and a New Jersey court recently ruled that it's not only the driver who's responsible-- if you know someone's driving when you send a text, you might be held responsible if he or she gets into an accident.
In the first part of Wednesday's Up to Date, we discuss the complications of dual-tasking and driving with University of Kansas psychology professor Paul Atchley and David Teater, senior director of Transportation Strategic Initiatives for the National Safety Council.

- Paul Atchley is a professor of psychology at KU, where he started in 1998. Atchley received his doctoral degree from the University of California, Riverside in 1996 and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1998. He has received the H. Bernerd Fink Award for Excellence in Teaching and a Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence. His research is focused on issues of vision and attention related to driving.
- David Teater is senior director of Transportation Strategic Initiatives for the National Safety Council. In 2009, the NSC became the first organization to call for a nationwide ban on all forms of cell phone use while driving.
