New Service For Discount Arts Tickets Launches

Kansas City, MO – Nearly a dozen arts organizations have signed on to a new online discounted ticket service that launched this month. KCUR's Laura Spencer reports.

In Chicago, it's Hot Tix. In New York City, it's TKTS. Now, Kansas City has TixKC.com. The ticket service offers half-price, day-of-sale tickets to local performing arts shows, including theater, dance, and music, from the American Heartland Theatre to New Ear.

Tom Mardikes, Chair of the Theatre Department at UMKC, and co-founder of Actors Theatre KC, developed the idea. According to Mardikes,"The research has shown that a half-price day of sale performing arts ticket is a great way to develop new audiences for producers and to bring in young people, particularly under the age of 30. It's the single best thing that can be done."

Tickets go on sale each day at 11 for matinees and 3 for evening performances. TixKC.com is a collaboration between the UMKC Central Ticket Office and WDAF-TV.

Participating arts organizations in TixKC.com: Actors Theatre KC, American Heartland Theatre, Harriman-Jewell Series, Kansas City Ballet, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Kansas City Symphony, New Ear, UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, UMKC Theatre, Unicorn Theatre, Wylliams/Henry Contemporary Dance Theater
