Kansas City, MO – After about a year of intense negotiation, the Kansas City Missouri teachers' union has reached a tentative deal with the district on a collective bargaining agreement. Teachers have been working without a contract since July.
The previous agreement was allowed to expire last year, after a recent Missouri Supreme Court decision turned the informal contract into a legally binding document. School district officials said they wanted to re-negotiate the agreement from scratch. After some rough patches last year, negotiators from the Kansas City Federation of Teachers and the district have made progress since January. And both sides say they are satisfied with the deal. The school board unanimously approved the agreement last week. It goes before the union membership on Wednesday, and if passed, will take effect immediately and last until August 2011. The union will continue with negotiations on agreements for other school-related personnel.
